Short answer? No. There now you know, well that was the shortest blog post ever!
Longer answer? Also no…but this time let’s elaborate!
AI is everywhere right now. It’s writing captions, generating ideas, planning content calendars and being pitched as the magical solution to every overwhelmed business owner’s problems.
And we get it, it’s super tempting to lean in. You’re running a business, spinning plates, juggling all of the priorities and maybe just trying to remember what day it is so the idea of AI taking care of your marketing sounds tempting.
But let’s be clear:
AI cannot market your business properly or effectively.
It can support your marketing, speed things up, and help organise your thoughts, but it should never replace strategy, personality or human common sense.
And in case you missed everything we stand for, wax lyrical about and preach like we’re hosting the worlds pinkest, funkiest sermon, personality is what helps you stand out, reach your audience and successfully run your business.
That’s something AI simply cannot replicate.
So what can I use AI for in running my small business?
AI can be a useful tool for small business marketing support when used sparingly.
It’s great for:
- Brainstorming and organising your thoughts
- Getting down your key messages and refining them
- Repurposing blogs into shorter captions
- Helping clear creative cobwebs
Think of AI as a fast assistant, not a marketing director or strategic partner.
So what CAN’T AI do for my business?
Ugh SO many things let’s be honest.
AI cannot:
Get inside the minds of your ideal audience
Which sounds super Matrix like and scary (and it kind of is) AI is really only as good as the information you’re able to give it so if you don’t feel like you know and understand your customers odds are it won’t either. It doesn’t know what your audience truly cares about, what objections they have, or why they choose you over someone else.
Build a marketing strategy
A strong marketing strategy for small businesses needs nuance, decision-making and understanding your goals, offers and capacity. AI can suggest generic tactics. It cannot think strategically for your business.
Replicate your unique personality and build trust
Ultimately (and I’m sorry if you’re tired of this phrase but it’s 100% true, tried and tested) people connect with people.
Your tone of voice, humour, opinions, story and lived experience are what make your brand memorable. AI can mimic that style (and the style of your competitors) but it cannot be you.
The Risk of Using AI for All Your Content
If every caption, blog and email is fully AI-generated, you risk sounding like everyone else who is also using AI and let’s be clear there are some clear, massive, neon sign, dead giveaways when you are doing this (cough calm, clarity, quietly with intention cough)
That means you’ll be churning out pretty bland content with generic messaging and zero personality and in a sea of robotic content, human brands stand out more than ever.
Ready to ditch the robotics and market like a real-life human? We’ll also settle for witches, skin walkers, zombies, sirens and all manner of magical beasts and beings.
At Heyday, we’re all for using smart tools to make life easier but never at the expense of your dazzling personality, a sparkling kick-ass strategy or sounding like an actual human being (or mythical being).
We help small businesses create marketing that feels like them, with audience-first strategies designed to help them connect with more of the RIGHT people.
So if your content is starting to feel a bit copy-paste, your strategy is held together by hope, or you’ve asked AI to “just sort it all out” one too many times…
Then let’s talk and we can sort it all out for you.
Good marketing doesn’t come from pressing a button, it comes from knowing who you are, what makes you different, and how to communicate that brilliantly.
And lucky for you… that’s kind of our thing.
